Be Realistic When Selling on eBay

As some of you know, I spent many years buying and selling both on and offline and several of my products are based upon my own experience in this area. I know that the vast majority of my customers and subscribers have an interest in trading whether it be on eBay or at the local market but more and more I am seeing people with completely unrealistic expectations of what they will be able to do. Most commonly these unrealistic expectations are in respect of how much it actually costs to purchase specific products and what they can then be sold on for. I regularly get emails from people who want to know where they can purchase products such as mobile (cell) phones, new release DVDs, Playstation games and similar at, say, a 50% discount to resell on eBay. The fact is that such a thing is not available - it is a simple case of supply and demand and competition. Take DVDs for example, most people think that these are excellent products to resell on eBay because they are very popular, not particularly expensive and easy to package and ship. Unfortunately, they could not be more wrong. The DVD market is one of the most competitive that there is - take a look for yourself and see how many auctions there are on eBay for DVDs at any one time. I have just looked and counted almost 300,000! At any one time there will only be a certain number of buyers wanting to purchase a particular DVD and if you take into account the numerous different places there are that each buyer could purchase from, it is likely that in general, there will be more copies of an individual DVD available than there are buyers to purchase them. This situation causes prices to fall. The other factor that forces prices down is the fact that one DVD is the same as another. By this I mean that from a buyers point of view, there is no difference to a new DVD purchased on eBay to one which is purchased from their local DVD store. Often the only way to differentiate is on price and of course, the only way to make the price more attractive to a buyer is to lower it. The above reasons help to explain why the wholesale discount on a new release DVD is just £1 or £2 at most ($2 or $3 roughly in the US). When you take into account the fact that the large retail chains can purchase thousands of DVDs at a time and receive a bigger discount than individual traders, you soon see why it is very difficult for a small business to compete in such a competitive industry. You simply cannot purchase new release DVDs at 50% discount and even if you could, it wouldn t be long before prices were forced down as there is always someone willing to sell a little bit cheaper than the next man. It isn t just DVDs that fall into this category. Take mobile (cell) phones. Here in the UK you can walk down just about any high street and get the latest phones either free or for a minimal token payment. The stores are relying on making their money from the line rental contract that you will have to sign in order to get the phone. Of course, the actual cost of the phone is not free - most new mobiles are actually worth £200 or £300 which means that if you want to buy a batch of phones at wholesale, you are going to be looking at a pretty high unit cost. As with most electrical products, the market is competitive and prices have been forced down which means that the difference between your wholesale buying price and your retail selling price is minimal. There are numerous products that suffer from the same market conditions as DVDs and phones and new/small traders really should avoid trying to sell such items at all costs because it will usually be frustrating and ultimately not financially rewarding. When trying to decide what products to sell, you need to be thinking about the type of market that a particular product is sold in. If there are already numerous sellers and many large companies selling at considerable discounts this is far from ideal. The exception to the rule is if you are able to add value in some way to make your offering more unique. I wrote about adding value last year in one of my newsletters - you can read it here: http://www.thetraderonline.com/jul2204.html At the end of the day, it is all about research, being realistic and having an understanding of the market that you want to operate in. Whilst it would be great to be able to buy and sell new release DVDs (or whatever) all day long, doubling your money every time, I am afraid that this is just not going to happen. eBay Sellers - How to Market Your Auctions

Do you sell on eBay? If you do, your objective is likely focused on creating as much income as you can by promoting goods that you no longer need or want on eBay. Regrettably, there are now thousands, if not millions, of those who are interested in doing the same thing. This often means a stable boost in rivalry for top the spots. Even with competition, you should still be able to create an earnings windfall when using eBay, however you may need a little bit of assistance. That assistance could come in the form of enhanced promotional ideas. When many of us think of internet marketing, we often automatically think of online retail stores or online websites. Although you are not running a your own proprietary online retail store, you are trying to make a profit online; therefore, you are, in a way, like a retailer. Just having your for sale items listed on eBay is enough to get your eBay items exposure, but you may want to think about taking it a step farther. There are a number of different ways that you can go about marketing your for sale eBay items, without having to spend a dime. There are a large variety of options for marketing your a number of different ways that you can go about marketing your for auction friendly items on eBay without incurring additional expense, including purchasing the items! That is the age that outlines all of the items that you currently have available for sale. Many eBay community members click other member’s pages just out of curiosity, but it not uncommon for someone to find something that catches their eye. Simply starting a few conversations with other eBay community members, even just occasionally, may help to up your eBay exposure. Another relatively easy way that you can market your eBay auction listings to the general public is by posting on a number of message boards, besides eBay. There are a number of message boards that allow internet users, just like you, to post information on items that they have available for sale, both on and off of eBay. Many other comparatively effortless marketing options and opportunities for your eBay marketing exposure is made through exposing your catalog of items to the world wide reach of eBay’s universal market. This included your access to posting on a number of message board type forums in addition to eBay. There are a wide variety of such messaging communities that are open to Internet users. Most will allow you to post information on products and services they are available for sale, whether or not they are already offered on eBay. Taking advantage of such additional marketing opportunities is simple. You just provide your link and a short story about your items that are for sell. This will not only open you to another market but will build your eBay exposure as well. Once you decide to get serious by expanding the ways you expose your items it is important to be careful where you promote your eBay listings. Review the rules carefully to be sure you are not violating any applicable rules when posting your goods. By now you should be well aware that spamming is not permitted anywhere! Your reputation is your best sales tool. Don’t ruin it with a spamming violation. You won’t recover. Regarding online message boards, stretch out to find as many as you can and take advantage of their signature feature. Signature features are provided by many message boards to allow you to leave your name or a quote, however many boards allow you to place a link in this area to promote your business and/or products you wish to sell. Check the policy carefully before you post a signature. You will always find the exact specifications the forum requires. An additional simple and often overlooked marketing tip is to promote your eBay products and services by adding a line to your email, signature line, and webpage. This can be a text ad or a full blown ad banner depending on the application. Use wording like, “check out my eBay auctions,” and place it at the end of each of your eBay listings. This is free advertisement. Don’t miss out! About The Author: Alex Rich PhD is a personal and business coach. You know the stories about $80K incomes from eBay. eBay Affiliate Program

eBay is probably the best way to start any home business. It can get you familiar with the online business world. It has it highs and lows of sales. The one big complaint about ebay in recent years : the constant changing of auction and auction option fees. Back in 1998 you could put an average ebay auction up for fifty cents to a dollar. Now they charge buy it now fees and final value fees. Your average ebay auction can cost five to ten dollars when all is said and done. It s almost like taxes, they keep raising them. The problem is you never see half of these fees until the auction is over. eBay has gotten really sneaky in the past few years, sneaking in new fees here and there. Like they aren t making enough. They are the biggest online marketplace in the world. They probably get over 25 million customers a day ( that s just and estimated guess). It may take a small auction hall to come out of no where and take over the marketplace monopoly. Ebay is probably the biggest thing to ever happen to the consumer that wanted to save money, as well as the merchant who wanted to sell and make money. Let s face it, ebay is a monopoly. Even yahoo had to shut down their auction pages down. Yahoo hung in there for a while but, Ebay put them right out of business. If you look at any other market, there is always a contender. Pepsi and Coke. Microsoft and Apple. But with ebay, there is nobody who even comes close. The good thing is, ebay now let s you profit from them with a new program. How about affiliate marketing. I told you a little about that yesterday. Well, ebay has an affiliate section now. It s probably the newest way to make money and it works. Ebay Affiliate Program is set up so you can advertise any auction you want, not just your own auctions. So if you have an ebay affiliate link on your website and someone clicks the link and wins the auction; you get commission. You get 50%-75% commission on each winning bid and $25-$35 dollars per new active ebay member (most people that join stay active). Ebay affiliate marketing, it s very hot right now. The ebay affiliate program, is a great way to make some money. It s very easy, all you need is a website or blog and post your affiliate links. Ebay even gives you affiliate tools to make it easier to post your affiliate links. They have a great, "best practices section" where they give you all kinds of tips and tricks to bring in more traffic. They have everything there to help you succeed. It s a very simple way to make a lot of money. They say that the top 50 ebay affiliates, are all making over a million dollars a year. Affiliate marketing is the next big thing to hit the online world. Hop on now before something else comes around to take over or ruin it. If you don t go after ebay s affiliate program you are only losing out. I recommend it to all. Right now, I am just telling you about ebay s affiliate program, go try it out. You will understand it more, once you actually do it. In a month or two, I will post some ebay affiliate program strategies, to really boost your sales. Ebay Ebook Success: Using Reviews and Guides to Promote your eBay Store

In my last article I discussed how to effectively promote your eBay store using your About Me page. In that article I outlined that it was one of the most underutilised promotion opportunities on eBay. Ebay Reviews and Guides are a new introduction by eBay, but are just as underutilised by eBay sellers as the About Me page. In this article I will discuss how you can utilise this excellent feature to promote your eBay store: 1) What is an eBay Review or Guide?:- A review is simply your own personal review of any product on the eBay market, for example a CD, DVD, book etc. You give the product a rating out of five and then write a brief personal review about what you liked, didn t like etc. A guide can be on absolutely anything you are qualified to give advice on. I convert these newsletter articles into "Ebook Success" guides on eBay which complement my eBay store. However, guides don t necessarily have to relate to your eBay store. If for example, you enjoy fishing then you could write guides related to fishing. 2) Why should I write an eBay Review or Guide?:- I would personally recommend writing guides over reviews. The reason for this is that when you write a review the only credit you receive is a small link to your eBay feedback profile. When you write a guide you receive a link back to your eBay feedback profile, eBay store, eBay About Me page, and some of your active listings. Anyway, whether you choose to write a review or guide, the reason for doing so is promotion. People reading your review or guide will be made aware of your eBay presence, may click on a link to one of your pages, and this may even lead to a sale. 3) What should I write my eBay Review or Guide on?:- As I mentioned earlier I write "Ebook Success" guides which are basically converted copies of these newsletter articles. However, the possibilities are endless. Just think of your hobbies, your job, or anything else which you know enough about to write a series of guides on. Everyone can write about at least ONE THING. Once you have found your topic, break it down into small, relevant guides. If you re really, really struggling to find a topic for a guide, then write a review on a product that you own. Although the promotion will not be as great as the promotion you would receive from a guide, it still provides you with free promotion. That s all there is to it. Keep writing regular guides and if they are good people will rate them positively. The more positive ratings you get, the higher your reviewer rank gets. Also, the more guides you write, the more pages you have on eBay promoting your listings, your store, and your feedback. Since reviews and guides are relatively new and haven t fully taken off yet, it s best to get in now, while the majority of eBayers are not writing reviews and guides. That way when it takes off on a larger scale, you will already have a solid foundation upon which to build. To write your own eBay review or guide go to http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/. If you want to see view my reviews and guides for some inspiration then go to http://search.reviews.ebay.co.uk/members/ebookcavern. This is a promotional opportunity that you should not pass up. 3 eBay Tricks That Will Make You Money Now!

We ve all heard of eBay. It s a great place to get great deals and maybe even make some money. The mammoth site is home to millions of buyers who want to buy your stuff. And even though you may think the competition is just too much, I ll fill you in on 3 eBay tricks that will definitely make you some money. 1.eBay Arbitrage With all the people on eBay, there s bound to be someone who doesn t know what they re doing. Actually, there are a lot of them and a lot of them are trying to sell things on eBay and have no clue how to go about it. This is where you step in. It s easier than you think. Find a product that is listed poorly that has low or no bids and grab for a bargain price. Then turn around, list it professionally (which I know you know how to do) and make a profit. Actually, you could use this is a source for products for a while. 2. Misspellings in eBay Listings To go along with the above eBay trick, there are also a lot of sellers that can t spell. Fat fingers, some call it. This makes it mostly impossible to find their items. Think about it, the majority of people searching for items on eBay use the search engine. Unless they magically misspell the word the same way the seller did, no bids for that auction. On the other hand, you could search for popular products with various misspelled versions of the keywords. Also, there is software that will help you find all sorts of misspelled auction listings. 3. Sell a Backend Information Product This is one of the best ideas I ve ever learned for using eBay. This works better if you have an eBay business set up or if you re already selling on eBay. What you do is, set up your About Me page almost like it was your own separate web page. Then, either create your own information product (related to your actual product) or become an affiliate for an information product. This will add income and may even surpass your current income from eBay and it s essentially automated, once set up. Well, hopefully you can take one of these eBay tricks and put them to use. eBay is such an enormous opportunity to make money and you can find more and more diverse ways to do so. Do you want to learn more ways to make money on eBay ? Maybe even make enough money to quit your current job? Visit Real Auction Income to learn how.

Ebay is Still a Great Online Opportunity

I just finished reading an article posted over at MSN entitled "Should eBay s Meg Whitman resign?" and want to say a few positive words in defense of eBay. Maybe it s just me, but I don t get all the whining about eBay. To read some of the comments posted by readers of that article you would think eBay had paid a hit man to kill their dear old Aunt Matilda. What drives an eBay seller s frustration level to these heights? I think much of the buyer and seller frustration with eBay is self-inflicted. The attitude you take with you into any relationship, be it a marriage, friendship or even a business partnership, in large part determines the quality of that relationship. Here s what I mean. I simply cannot afford to hate eBay! So I don t think HATE EBAY THOUGHTS all day. I am in a business partnership with eBay for Pete s sake! If everyday when the opportunity clock rang I jumped out of bed, started ringing my hands and thinking to myself...oh no...how can I possibly make it on eBay, eBay is so mean to me, and eBay has such lousy customer service, and I just hate their feedback system, and...look what everybody else is saying about eBay it MUST be true, someone even took the time to write an article on an important web site. Yea right, a professional writer getting paid to write an article they know will pull your strings or they get fired. Here s the comment I love the most from forum posters. EBay is just out to make a profit, they don t CARE about me. This kind of reader comment is just too much for me and sends me straight to the bathroom for a Kleenex. EBay out to make a profit, ya think? Two years ago, I knew zippo about selling on eBay and today I am sitting here in my pajamas, while I write this article, able to decide how I want to spend my energy today. I am the major part of this equation but another huge variable of this same equation that allows me this kind of personal freedom is EBAY. So HERE...HERE to eBay! I won t be throwing any stones your way. I think eBay s customer service is terrific! PayPal s is even better! And when I need help I can find it. I probably paid over $15,000 in eBay and PayPal fees in 2007 and they were worth every penny. In fact, call me crazy but I think their fees are a bargain when I take the time to think what it would cost me in time and money to drive my own traffic to my own website. In fact I would go as far to say eBay makes it too easy for me and has acted as my own personal King Status Quo III. I m going to let you in a little secret...it goes something like this. If you re focused on the negative you will SEE the negative, If you re focused on the positive you will SEE the positive. I fell into this trap with my opinions of Internet Marketers. It was so easy for me to see the negative with all the Hipster...Dufuss s out there trying to sell get-rich-quick crap online I started seeing all the faults of even the best intended Internet Marketers. EVERYONE has faults, even a mega-successful enterprise like eBay. The only question I carry with myself throughout my day is, "how can I use all of the tremendous tools and traffic eBay spends millions of dollars on to my advantage?" Now I don t get paid to stir up readers, but if I have stirred up any pro or con eBay juices inside your head, go ahead and let it out. I can take it. Just keep it clean. This is just my take on how I feel about eBay. Need a break from the same old Internet reading rut? Like to be entertained, inspired and provoked to deeper thoughts than how to get rich on the Internet? Then join me on My eBay Adventure where I ve thrown open the captain s log to share with you the sights and sounds from the mizzen mast of my ship of discovery. You won t be disappointed.

Avoiding Phishing Scams, Account Take Overs and Fraud on eBay

eBay has not only become the world wide market place for people to make money but has become a favorite space for scam artists to find suckers to fall for there tactics. Though eBay does what they can to catch them, here are some simple ways to avoid falling victim to these traps: 1- Check EVERY email before you open it to see if it really is from eBay. If it comes into your "My Messages" box you are assured 99% of the time that it is from eBay. I would recommend downloading the eBay Toolbar with Account Guard. This tool can identify if the email is legitimate or not. 2. eBay will NEVER ask for passwords, account information or financial information by email. If at all possible avoid clicking any links, instead copy and paste into the web browser. Also eBay emails do NOT include attachments. If you ever see an attachment DO NOT open it. 3. If the letter opens with a generic term like "Attention eBay member" it is probably a spoof email. 4. If the letter contains links to Web pages that look exactly like eBay sign-in pages then it is a spoof. Do not ever send personal information using email, If you receive one of these emails forward it directly to eBay at spoof@ebay.com. Though eBay has become the best place to buy and sell it is important to watch for scammers. Hopefully you haven t already fallen for one of these traps, if you have contact ebay immediately, change your password, and change your email address. How to Start an eBay Store and Use It Creatively

Consistently ranked as one the twenty most popular websites, eBay is a magnet for both buyers and sellers. From a seller’s point of view, it’s a marketing dream. Tens of thousands of people visit eBay every day and most of them are eager and willing to buy something if you have what they want. Better still is the fact that there’s no tooth-and-nail competition for top search engine listings here. Just eBayers in substantial numbers, all looking for something to buy. Your job is to determine what they want, find it, post an auction and make money. That being said, there’s no doubt that some eBay sellers are much more successful than others. Most sellers start out selling personal items from around the house that they no longer want. Once that well runs dry, the wheat separates from the chaff. It’s the sellers who really understand eBay who go on to Power Seller status and more. Really successful eBay sellers seem to excel in several different areas. They know how to pick and source hot products and are very selective with respect to the products they sell. Power sellers also know how to write good ads. They know what people want to hear and they give it to them. Finally, successful sellers never stop learning how to put eBay to work. The more you learn about eBay and some of the tools it has to offer, the more you can earn. One of the good examples of this is the eBay store. There are many good reasons to start an eBay store. Once you have your own store, it’s a lot easier to cross promote items and get your wares in front of more potential buyers. It will also cost less to list items and you can even automate the whole listing and feedback process using a tool like eBay’s own Selling Manager or Selling Manager Pro. In a certain sense, however, an eBay store is more about marketing that it is about selling directly. If you can make this marketing mindset your own, you can use it to make profits on eBay that go far beyond your earnings from actual auctions. This mindset is about building a relationship with your customers, which really means building a list of contacts who will go on to buy from you time and again. One way to accomplish this with an eBay store is to use the feature that allows visitors to sign up for your store newsletter. This gives you the chance to send email to anyone who signs up on a once-a-week basis with information about new products, discounts or other special promotions. You also get to add a link to your newsletter opt-in page on every auction you run. As your list grows, you can market to it and earn more money than you can with auctions alone. As an eBay store owner, you can also add a link to your auctions that allows other eBayers to add your store to their list of favorites in their “my eBay” profile. Once someone adds your store to their list, eBay will automatically email them a list of your auctions once a week at absolutely no cost to you. It’s a great way to stay in touch with potential buyers and ultimately sell more products. These are just a few examples of how the creative use of an eBay store can help you build an eBay business that will grow profitably for many years to come. Of course, you won’t find these strategies on eBay itself because eBay provides help mostly on the nuts and bolts of setting up a store. Fortunately, there are a number of excellent online resources that explain how to start an eBay store and how to use it creatively. You ll find more valuable tips on how to start an eBay store in this inexpensive, 65-page guide. Also, here s a creative way to make money on eBay with a very different kind of eBay store.

Having A Backup Plan For The Serious eBay Seller

Not a day goes past when I here of some seller frustrated that eBay have pulled their auction listing. It is very easy to violate an eBay listing guideline without knowing, the first you’ll learn about it is when you receive an email from eBay. If it’s a serious violation or a number of smaller repeated violated eBay can & will close down or suspend your account. Don’t be fooled into thinking they need your revenue as a seller, I know of one eBay power seller who paid close to £25,000 per year to eBay in sellers fees & had his account closed overnight. Firstly and most importantly familiarize yourself with all the selling guidelines on eBay. By doing things right first time, you’ll be less likely to have your auctions cancelled by eBay’s safe harbour team. But let’s image the worse case scenario, you’re an eBay trading assistant or a professional seller dependant on eBay and overnight eBay close your account, pulling all your listings in the process. Overnight your business will disappear. Don’t fool yourself that by sticking strictly to eBay guidelines you’ll avoid the hassle. You’ll have many competitors on eBay who will try and report you at some point, even if their accusation is false your listing may be pulled by an overzealous eBay employee. Leaving eBay listing violations alone there are still potential hazards that may jeopardize your account or account status. Negative feedback, your account being hi-jacked, even forgetting your account password could cause massive delays to your business. If you get too much negative feedback, you may want to abandon the account altogether and start afresh. eBay does allow you to have more than one registered account as long as it using another email address, so it is essential to have at least one backup account for emergency use. Keep one registered for a spare account and also remember to consider that eBay does not use allow certain selling features (Buy-It-Now, Featured Plus) to be used until your feedback is at a certain level - normally 10 for the most widely used features. It may be worth buying a few low priced items to get your feedback to the required level. If you are suspended from selling eBay guidelines states the following: “Members who are suspended are prohibited from registering new accounts with eBay, or bidding or selling on eBay using any existing accounts. eBay reserves the right to suspend existing accounts as well as new accounts opened by anyone in the same household of a suspended user or by any other associates of a suspended user.” Now I’m sure that 99% of eBay sellers, especially serious sellers (like yourself) reading this would not violate rules to a degree where your account was suspended. And I’m not recommending you to continue selling on eBay even though your were suspended. BUT, what I will say is in the unlikely event this did happen what would you do? You have an obligation to your clients, yourself and your business to get things back on track as soon as possible. Having an eBay account registered in the name of a distantly located friend which you can use discreetly may allow you to keep your business long enough to sort out your original problem with eBay. Some situations can be sorted out within hours, while others carry an automatic suspension for 30 days. Now, no business can afford to stop trading for 30 days & expect to carry on when the suspension is lifted as if nothing has happened. You’ll lose credibility, you’ll lose money and most importantly you will have lost a lot of clients. Mark Kenny, runs the AuctionCUT forum. The forum is for any eBay or related auction subject. Ebay and Auctions - 3 Advanced Tips to Make it Good In Ebay and Auctions

E-bay has cocooned itself into becoming one of the most dominant auctions sites if not the most dominant and prevalent auction site on the net. There have been many similar sites that came after trying to equal the dominance that the E-bay has, but significantly, none has equaled the might that it has - for now. For this reason, more and more people are being enticed to become part of the dominating end due to the greater opportunities which bear promise of more fortune and wealth. So, if you are seriously thinking about how well you can make in the arena of e-bay and auctions, well then, the following tips and suggestions are being handed: a. Learn the fundamental concepts that go along with E-bay and Auctions. Most of the time, people who endeavor into something fail not because they are not equipped with the resources to forego with it but because they failed to foresee what is to expect at the end of it. Making yourself equipped with knowledge and learning about what is there to be prepared about will, to the least guarantee a better journey to your endeavor. b. Investigate what basically sells hot in the market. You can go as far as being a buyer and a bidder just so you can ensure that you know what sort of items are selling like pancakes on the net. This is a crucial element because you are trying to establish a firmer and well-designed business plan and opportunities. c. Choose the appropriate platform to conduct business with e-bay. You may opt to have your own e-bay store or engage into small venture of buy and sell of items. It is essentially important that you know what you are capable of doing at the time of engaging yourself into e-bay because every step of the way towards being successful on it is going to be a test in your capability as a business enthusiast. 3 Reasons to Start an eBay Wholesale Store

First of all, let me clarify. What do I mean when I say an "eBay Wholesale Store"? I m referring to a store you set up on eBay in which you sell products you have purchased directly from the manufacturer at wholesale prices. Why would you want to do this? 1. To Make More Money If you already sell on eBay you know the potential there is to make money. Having a reliable source of products allows you to make more money, more consistently. By using a wholesale supplier, you can bypass all those old, time consuming ways to source your products (garage sales, yard sales, thrift stores, etc.). This frees you up to concentrate on other aspects of your business, such as marketing, pricing, template design, branding, etc. 2. To Look Professional Sorry to sound superficial, but image is everything when it comes to business, especially online. eBay stores give you so many options that will make your store look professional, without having to be a tech savvy person. With an eBay wholesale store, you ll be able to brand yourself as a professional in the industry or niche you choose to sell in. 3. To Work From Home Probably the best luxury of starting an eBay wholesale store is the ability to work from home. Of course, you may already do this, but the level of income you receive from a store is more likely to allow you the freedom to work from home. This means no boss to answer to, no rules to follow, you can set your own hours, etc. There are many advantages to starting an eBay wholesale store. If you really want to maximize your profit on eBay, you should consider starting one. It may just bring you in enough income to quite that annoying day job. An Emerging Market in eBay Consignments: The eBay Trading Post (Part II In A Series)

An Emerging Market in eBay Consignments: The eBay Trading Post (Part II In A Series) In 2002, the eBay consignments business was born, referred to by eBay as the Trading Assistant Program. It s possible that eBay didn t foresee just how much they would benefit form their eBay consignments program. Designed to unite experienced eBay sellers with people who want heir merchandise sold on eBay without having to do it themselves, the Trading Assistant program has enjoyed enormous success. As big as eBay had become -- larger than all other online auction venues combined -- they were still missing out on a large segment of the population; the technophobes. These people would sell goods on eBay if they had access to a computer and a digital camera, and had the time and inclination to learn how to run an auction. But they either don t have the technology or they lack the desire to become auctioneers, or both. Since they re not on line, they re not likely to learn about Trading Assistants who advertise primarily through eBay. And even if they saw the ads, they probably wouldn t trust them. You see, people active in the online community are already comfortable with the environment, which has an element of anonymity. But a non-computer person is more likely to want to deal with a real, brick-and-mortar retail business. They may not trust someone who runs auctions out of their home. How to reach these people? Introducing the concept of the "Trading Post"... A Trading post is to eBay consignments what the typical consignment shop is to the average community. It s a drop off location that allows consumers to drop their stuff off and have it sold for them as a service. It s a retail location that markets itself to consumers as a local, experienced ebay consignments seller -- a Trading Assistant with a brick-and-mortar store. While any ebay trading assistant can establish an ebay consignments service out of a retail location, only a Trading Post can put the eBay brand on their physical storefront. (A trading assistant can only advertise inside their store). With this privilege comes a higher standard, ie, eBay has "raised the bar" on their requirements. A Trading Post must meet the following additional requirements: -Offers a staffed drop-off location or storefront with regular drop-in hours, so that clients can visit the location without calling ahead. -Has a feedback score of 500 or higher -Has at least 98% positive feedback -Has sales of at least $25,000 on eBay each month Online, clients can search for Trading Posts specifically, and Trading Posts may receive priority placement in search results. (Yes, even some online clients prefer the retail setting). Also, Trading Posts are displayed with a special icon next to their User ID. If you re a Trading Assistant who also meets the requirements, you automatically qualify as a Trading Post and do not need to take additional steps. Walt Duflock, Director of the eBay Trading Assistant Program and a real life trading assistant, has announced eBay s intention of having "secret shoppers" and "customer satisfaction surveys" to see if there are certain Trading Post locations eBay would like to support more than others. Regardless of your status on ebay, there are tools that everyone can use to build their success as TAs, available on the ebay site. I ve found many of them quite valuable. For example, among their efficiency tools, they recommend using contact management software. eBay regards this as a great tool for getting "a better understanding of how many prospects it takes to actually create one new client and how long it takes for a client to go from initial contact to hiring you as a TA." And as far as support, some of the Trading Posts have become so large that they no longer rely on eBay for help. Some have developed their own proprietary systems for tracking customers and inventory, and managing their auctions. The largest and most successful ebay consignment business will even get you started with your own franchise which includes the use of their proprietary systems. All you need to come up with is $55 K plus operating expenses. But, never fear. You can start your ebay consignment business on a shoestring, and this is how the majority begin. Since 1998, eBay and similar auction sites have been growing by leaps and bounds. eBay consignments are still in their infancy, but I predict a very bright future! © Copyright 2004 Carolyn Schweitzer DDS. 10 Reasons Why Most eBay eBook Sellers Fail

Some people think selling eBooks on eBay is easy. You just have to list a few eBooks with resale rights and wait for the money to roll in, right? WRONG! There is a lot more to selling eBooks than just listing a few auctions. Here are 10 reasons why most eBay eBook sellers fail. 1. Selling old titles. In a highly competitive world you need to stay ahead of the competition. Be on the lookout for new titles to sell all the time. 2. Following the herd. Don t be like every other eBay eBook seller, make your auctions different, create unique titles and sales pages to separate you from the crowd. 3. Poor eBook cover. People really do judge an eBook by its cover. Ensure you have a professional looking eBook cover. 4. Poor sales copy. Your sales copy is crucial; take your time getting your listings looking professional. Poor copy = poor sales. 5. Only selling other author s eBooks. To be a truly successful eBay eBook seller you need to be creating your own eBooks. This way you can control the price and market by selling unique titles. 6. Not selling brandable eBooks. Sell eBooks that allow you to ‘brand certain links inside, thus generating you an affiliate income after the initial sale. 7. Not having a download page. Don t send your eBook as an attachment or as a download link to a zip file. Create a download page where you can offer other products and services 8. Not capturing customer details. You should have tools in place that attempt to capture your customers email address. Offer free eBooks on your download page in exchange for your customers contact details. Why You Should Never Give Your eBay ID Details to a Competitor

There’s a lot of talk going on in online forums right now, between eBay PowerSellers, primarily those who are selling eBooks and other products about making money on eBay. A string of comments I spotted today originated with one PowerSeller stating he had been asked for his eBay ID to see what he was selling, so a person, purporting to be a potential eBook buyer, could check the seller’s actual against alleged success on eBay before placing an order. A whole string of negative feedbacks arrived for the PowerSeller that very same day, from different eBay buyers, none with more than ten or twenty feedback points. It transpired the individual seeking this person’s ID was also an eBay PowerSeller, although he had not left feedback from his own account for fear of getting negative feedback in return from the PowerSeller whose trust he abused. Instead he had enlisted ‘friends’ to open accounts, buy, then leave negative feedback. A little detective work paid off and the originator was quickly revealed and expelled from eBay. But it isn’t always that easy! Several major PowerSellers reported similar problems, all had innocently given their eBay IDs to untraceable individuals who then, it seems, recruited others to leave negative feedback for several major eBay sellers. Some of these nasty individuals are very cute and they realise anyone joining eBay purely to give negative feedback will quickly be expelled from the site in which case all feedback left by expelled members is removed from the system. That would of course restore the abused PowerSellers’ previously good feedback. So clever individuals recruiting others to do their dirty work ensure each new eBayer buys at least ten eBooks to generate positive feedback before leaving the odd negative or two. Problem solved. Except that, today, with more and more individuals leaving posts at the forums concerned, a big name American PowerSeller has started recording details of all persons leaving negative feedback for fellow members to hopefully spot a pattern that might highlight the original sources. It’s a hot argument: do you or don’t you give others your eBay ID? I always did, I know other PowerSellers who always do and haven’t encountered problems, yet! And before I move on, yes I have fallen victim to this awful practice. I received four negatives within two minutes from someone who emailed asking for my ID which I gave. This one, not so cute or clever as today’s operators, left negative feedback from his own eBay account before he had even been invoiced or paid for the products involved which in eBay’s books is ground for instant dismissal! It really is up to you what you do about giving ID details, but I suggest you confirm the email address of the person making the request. You could also ask them to give you their eBay ID and for you to reply directly through eBay which records the communication and is proof enough for eBay to investigate the matter. eBay Selling, Use the Completed Listings Tab to Do Research on Your Competitors

When selling on eBay, it is hard to find any kind of "niche" market. With the Marketplace being such a behemoth these days and people selling anything from dryer lint to high end automobiles, it is hard to find anything that isn t being sold online. However, it is still possible to find those categories, that even with ton of items listed for sale, aren t being sold and auctioned correctly or simply do not have enough listings or a big variety of items to sell well. These are the markets to find product for. Sometimes when deciding what to sell, it can help to start with simple research and launch a new product that you know will sell well making sure to guarantee success for your start up eBay business. When entering a keyword into the search box on eBay s homepage and performing a search for an item, a left hand navigation screen will appear beside the items for sale for that search. When scrolling down the page to about the middle section, you will notice a section on this left hand navigation bar with the title in light orange "Search Options". Under this category it has an option with a checkbox next to it "Completed listings". If you place a check in this box by clicking on it and then at the bottom of this same search options category click on the white button "Show Items", it will take you to the completed listings for this search for the last 90 days. eBay keeps a record on their site for the last 90 days of all listings that have ended including auctions, fixed price or store inventory product. This is an invaluable tool for anyone looking to sell on this marketplace or for anyone who is currently selling. I have been selling online for more than 10 years and I still use this feature for completed listings at least once a month. The data that it provides is as good as any traffic or sales report that I receive weekly. When selling anything whether online or retail locally, it is extremely important to understand and to know as much as possible about your competition. Your competitors may be changing and growing as rapidly as your own online business and you need to know what is working and not working for them. My eBay Store, Sit On This Ergonomics, is constantly updating as we add new product, make price changes and tailor our ads and text to better suite our product. Each change that we make has a direct effect on our business and how our customers purchase from us. Any good entrepreneur knows how important it is to stay ahead of the game and educating yourself on your direct competitors can help you to do this. Using the completed listings tabs can allow you to search by price, time or type of listing to even better tailor your research results to what you need for your type of item. Looking for how many of these items actually ended with buyers, how many items sold without any bids or clicks, how many categories are oversaturated with listings, or what price these items ended with are all important for a decision on whether or not to choose that item to sell online. Knowing the price that the item sells for can be the most important and I recommend when using the button for completed listings to use the pull down menu to sort the items by highest or lowest price to really see the range of prices better and to determine if you can even compete with the low prices found everyday online. On the eBay marketplace, items are sold at a far reduced rate from normal retail price. It is estimated that unless you can find an item with a price that is at least 60% below current retail value, you shouldn t waste your time, because someone is already selling it on eBay for this low discount price. It also helps to know if the price is low enough. Sometimes a product will show up with a lot of listings and yet no one is actually buying when you get down to the nitty gritty. Putting product out there online is different from actually selling it. You need to have a price low enough to have it sell now and keep it selling for a while to make it online. Using this tab can help you to do research needed to find out what the competitors are doing and how the product is selling in order to sell smart and sell well on the eBay marketplace. © 2007 Sit On This Ergonomics, LLC. Boost Your Sale Figures On eBay With Impeccable Customer Service

In business, customer service is second to none. So anyone hoping to make profit in business should be well aware of the significance of customer service. The same goes for eBay services too. If you wish to enhance the product ranking on eBay, then you need to concentrate on customer service. Sellers in a business are rated by the quality of the products as well as by their customer service. If you wish to be successful in your eBay dealing then you should concentrate on developing a good customer service policy. First, you can start by planning your customer service strategy for selling goods through eBay. EBay transactions are governed by specific rules and regulations and these are mentioned clearly on the eBay website. There are several rules and regulations, but don t waste time on all of them, instead you can get acquainted with those that apply directly to the eBay sales. Once you learn the dominant rules, then you can develop your own strategy. Predominantly, eBay customer service strategies should start with product explanation, but remember eBay is a not a place to pull or hype advertising. The best way would be to post a clear photo of the product on eBay. If applicable, you can also include the name of the manufacturer as well as the model details. If you wish to sell the product through eBay then you should not forget to mention the model identification number. If you feel that some items have a flaw then you should describe them, for instance if you are selling an article that has a small scratch then you should describe the intensity of the damage in simple words. Customers generally trust those who are lucid in dealings. Customer service strategies are maximized on eBay during the bidding and auction time. Buyers often want maximum information on the products that are displayed for sale. So if a potential customer contacts you for further information then you should reply immediately, as that might persuade the customer into buying the product. Always try and maintain good customer service as customers are the whole and sole of any business and you can do so by concentrating on prompt delivery. You can enhance your customer service by not charging for postage and packaging, though most customers usually don t mind if they are charged a fair price to cover all those expenses. Always try and make the customers as comfortable and relaxed as possible and don t overburden them with unseen charges, as nobody likes the feeling of being ripped. The customer service policy on eBay is very similar to that in other online transactions and the basic key to maintain good customer service is to maintain honesty, high-speed service. Hence, try and be transparent with your dealings as customers appreciate honesty. Sell Fossils on eBay

This is potentially a very profitable area with PowerSellers worldwide specialising in primarily beach finds and other items bought in from treasure hunters and people disposing of their collections. There’s a special category for ‘Fossils, Rocks, Minerals’ under ‘Collectables’, with other items sometimes available under ‘Jewellery’ and other categories where the original fossil, rock or mineral has been worked into some other product type. The main Rocks/Fossils/Minerals category splits into: Crystals Fossils Lapidary Materials Meterorites Tektites Mineral Specimens Shells Publications Other Rocks/Minerals Fossils/Rocks/Minerals is a massive subject area, well worth an encyclopaedia in its own right, so we’ll focus on Fossils here and leave you to grow a business selling just one element of this profitable trio before moving on to selling rocks and minerals later. Fossils are simply the remains of plants or animals that lived a long time ago or the evidence of them. Becoming an eBay Trader

Selling on eBay is incredibly simple; all you have to do is upgrade your existing account to a seller s account and away you go. If you sell just a few items you ll find it easy to upload and edit individual listings and keep an eye on them yourself, but if you sell in bulk this becomes unmanageable. Luckily eBay offers some useful tools to make power selling easier; this article outlines a few of them. eBay s turbo lister allow you to upload your items in bulk by working offline first to put all the details in. Once you ve finished editing, it uploads everything for you. You can even save templates to use for future listings, which is great as it means you don t have to create each listing individually. The selling manager allows you to manage all of your auctions quickly and easily. You can do everything in bulk such as relisting items and sending out invoices. There are templates to use for your emails to buyers so you don t have to write each email yourself. The pro selling manager allows you to automate a lot of these operations, meaning that you don t have to check your account as often. You can automatically email someone when they win your item, and automatically relist items if they go unsold the first time. The basic selling manager is free but the pro manager costs five pounds per month. To list an item on eBay there s a small fee which you pay just to put your item up. If it sells you pay a percentage of the sales value. You can add a picture to your listing for free, but if you want this picture to show up on your item listing in the search results you have to pay for this upgrade. You calculate your own postage costs, so make sure you cover the cost of your packaging. Some sellers start off their auctions with a very low opening bid to attract buyers, but their postage costs are very high to make up their money if the item sells cheaply. It s best to be honest about your postage however, as eBay guidelines say that you shouldn t overcharge. To become a merchant you have to accept Paypal payments. This is what a lot of buyers use to make their purchases, and it also gives you a measure of protection as no bank details are ever shared. To protect you further you can put controls on the type of buyer you accept for your items. This includes things like specifying that the buyer must have a Paypal account, or that they must be resident in the UK. Generally, buyers with Paypal accounts have a higher trust rate than those without. If you have an eBay shop you can add your company logo and branding. If you have a brand, people are more likely to remember you and use you again. Once you build up a lot of good feedback you ll find that people trust you more too. Also whatever you want to sell, from diamond jewelery to garden furniture, having a shop page gives you an extra platform to make buyers aware of you and the great service you provide.
